Method to assess the Hinterland

Within this strategy, the Hinterland is defined and mapped as the land around Melbourne zoned in municipal planning schemes as either:

The current extent of land in each of these planning scheme zones has been calculated for each Council as its 'Hinterland extent' and is expressed in hectares.

This method has been used to outline the current condition of the Hinterland (Condition) and set targets for the future (Targets).  Lead organisations are committed to achieving these targets (Leadership) and arrangements are in place to monitor and report on progress and success (Monitoring & reporting).

It is recognised that there would be value in complementing the assessment of Hinterland extent with an assessment of Hinterland condition (ie. the level to which the Hinterland is delivering the intended benefits for the environment, community and economy).  This type of assessment may be developed in the future.
